GMA's Inability to Beat ABS-CBN on Sunday Nights

Sunday nights are very typical for the Filipino family. After a day of family fun and bonding, it is time for Filipinos to watch their favorite TV shows on their homes while eating and before they go to sleep. Many Filipino families would prefer watch shows aired on ABS-CBN rather than those on GMA 7. Although some of GMA's shows on Sunday nights are social media stars, their popularity on social media is not enough for them to outmatch the high-quality programming that the Kapamilya network has when it comes to the ratings game. In fact, it is one of the many reasons why GMA 7 is the worst station in Philippine television today.

An example of this is the late Sunday night comedy talk show Gandang Gabi Vice, which holds the distinction of being known as the Trending Capital of Philippine Television because of its trending topics and distinctive guests that are being talked about worldwide on social media. Since its inception back in 2011, not only did it consistently conquering the ratings game in its timeslots, but also it has been victimizing its rival programs aired on GMA 7 from the start. Its most recent victims include the medical-themed mini-series Sa Puso ni Dok and the currently aired talent search copycat Bet ng Bayan.

Indeed, the top-rating Sunday shows aired on ABS-CBN have been posing a threat to its rival programs, although the magazine show Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho is GMA's top-rating and trending saving grace on Sunday nights. However, a new threat has entered into the scene. And that would be the second season of The Voice of the Philippines, which debuted last Sunday that has become a worldwide trending topic on social media. I would like to admit that social media is the main reason why more ABS-CBN shows are popular and less GMA shows are beginning to be recognized.

With The Voice of the Philippines making waves in Philippine television along with its fellow shows, it seems that the habit of watching television every Sunday night would never be the same again.
