UAAP Stays on ABS-CBN

It seems that the country's most popular collegiate sports league is most likely to stay with the true number one television station in the Philippines.

UAAP has decided to renew its broadcast rights with ABS-CBN Sports for another five years. And it begins on Season 78 (2015-2016) and will last until Season 82 (2019-2020). It was a done deal, and once this new contract ends on 2020, this will be the longest tenured broadcast deal among all the sports leagues in the country. This is because of the league's recent popularity over the years, highlighted by men's basketball and women's volleyball.

Both of these disciplines were the main focus of ABS-CBN Sports. During the past few years, they attracted record crowds of more than 20,000 spectators, especially during the championship series. Who would not have forgotten the National University's first UAAP senior men's basketball title after a 60-year drought and the Ateneo Lady Eagles' first UAAP women's volleyball championship? It seems that this was another successful year for both the league and ABS-CBN since 2000.

Another outstanding impression behind the league's success is the fact that ABS-CBN Sports began to air live weekly men's volleyball and men's football matches on Balls HD channel 167 and the official UAAP website, with delayed telecasts on ABS-CBN Sports and Action every Thursday and Friday, respectively. And I think that this trend will continue with a more extensive coverage and will popularize the league even further. To conclude, UAAP is nothing without ABS-CBN Sports. And that's a fact!!

What about NCAA on Sports5? Well, it looks like TV5's poor coverage of the league would push the oldest running collegiate sports league to reconsider and think over. If it decides to return to ABS-CBN Sports, then the ladder will be the true home of collegiate sporting events in the Philippines. If it decides to stay, well, too bad!! I would rather watch UAAP on ABS-CBN Sports+Action rather than just waiting for the NCAA coverage on TV5, which is just plain horribly wrong. Well, who cares? At least I gave a point about it. Don't you think so?
