Great Things You Need to Know About the PlayStation

Sony PlayStation

This year marks another milestone in the history of video games, as gamers from around the world are celebrating the 20th year anniversary of one of the most popular and well-known brands, namely the Sony PlayStation.

Since the original PlayStation 1 back in 1994 when it was first released in Japan, it was one of the most successful console brands in video game history today. It seems that Sony's first foray in the gaming industry would spawn many successors during its time. And so as a fitting tribute to the brand that we have known and loved through the years, I will give you five great things that you need to know about the Sony PlayStation and more.

1. PlayStation 2

The Sony PlayStation 2 is the best-selling console of all time today. Not only that, it is also the fastest-selling video game system that have sold 100 million units in just a few years. Many gamers consider the PS2 as a "Dreamcast killer" since its release in March 2000 dominated the gaming industry in a single bound, forcing the once-successful Sega Dreamcast to discontinue its road to market domination. Despite that, there is no doubt that the PS2 is known for some of the greatest gaming franchises in history such as God of War, Ratchet and Clank, and Jak and Daxter among others, as well as great games like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Final Fantasy X.

The PlayStation 2 would have been gone in the annals of gaming history if it wasn't for the success of its predecessor, the original PlayStation. Like its successor, the PlayStation is also known for its own brand of great games such as the Crash Bandicoot series, Final Fantasy VII, Parappa the Rapper, and many more. In fact, it was the first video game system in the world to have sold 100 million units in almost ten years of existence. The Sony PS1 held that distinction until the PS2 came in. For that, who cares? These two PlayStation-branded consoles have made their own mark in history.

3. PlayStation Portable

The success of the first two PlayStation systems have spawned a new player in the portable gaming market, the PSP (PlayStation Portable). It is like a PS2 but on a portable gaming player. Sony may be new to the said market, but is proven that it is worth it. The Sony PSP has sold more than 73 million units worldwide. And that is a fact.

4. PlayStation Store

One of the best things about the PlayStation brand today is its own store. It was first introduced on the Sony PSP. And the store has expanded its available content through the years. I was surprised when I found out that the store was discontinued worldwide in 2011, but it was relaunched a few months later but only in American and European markets. The store has more than 600 million downloads in 2009, but the PlayStation Store will always be remembered as part of the legacy of the iconic PlayStation brand.

Last but not the least is the most successful video game console today, the PlayStation 4. I cannot tell you many reasons why the PS4 is the best right now. But I would let this video review tell the story anyway.
