Knowledge Channel, the only educational television channel in the Philippines, celebrated its 15th year anniversary last month. It is intended for millions of public school students in the Philippines, particularly in remote areas, in order to effectively disseminate the lessons supplementing in the national curriculum.

I remembered the time during the early years of Knowledge Channel when most of its programming came from North America. I can still remember watching Pappy Land and Mathematters on that channel back then. There were also programs from Canada like Mathica's Workshop, Just Say No!, Celestin, Stuff, and Spilled Milk. Yes, within those early years, I feel that it is effective for ABS-CBN to have a channel that would educate many children for more generations to come.

Today, most of the programming in Knowledge Channel focuses more on its local production and on past educational programs that were aired on ABS-CBN 2 even before the channel existed such as Sineskwela, Hiraya Manawari, Bayani, Math Tinik, Pahina, I Got It, and Why Not? among others. Furthermore, the channel continues to carry past educational bundles from PTV like CONSTEL and Eskwela ng Bayan.

So far, Knowledge Channel has reached thousands of public schools in 54 different provinces all over the country and millions of households in 58 provinces. But despite the channel's mission to provide access in every public school in the country, less than 5 percent of the schools receive the channel through satellite dishes and respective program guides for teachers.

But this will all change as more Filipino households and public school students will experience watching Knowledge Channel on their television sets when digital television arrives. And that is a fact!!
