Protecting Yourself from Scams Existing in the Digital Age
Thousands of Filipinos have been victimized by different types of scams through the years. But since we are now in the age of computers, the Internet and mobile phones, more and more Filipinos will become victims of these scams lurking around physically and around the Web. If you know what is good for you, you should be ready and well-prepared to protect yourself from these scams.
Online and text scams have eventually becoming more aggressive, as many of them aim to steal money from those who have either a mobile phone or a computer. A well-known mobile-based remittance service has given us tips on how to prevent yourself from these scams. Maybe I cannot explain them very long, but they will be useful and helpful for you and your family in times of need.
1. Do not share your cellphone's PIN number to anyone suspicious. Make sure you have protected your contacts from unidentified mobile phone numbers that appear on your phone. If your phone's PIN has been used, then you should change it as soon as possible.
2. When you receive an SMS saying that you just won a prize, then it is a scam. This means that even though you are not registered to join a contest or raffle, your mobile phone number must have been used. Just contact the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to confirm it. It is the only way for you to know that the prize you just have won unexpectedly is officially not approved by the said agency.
3. Do not enter any online investment scams that mysteriously offered to you on your mobile phones. Consult a trusted financial adviser about it. You could lose more money when you enter any unauthorized investment scam.
4. If there is a text message that says one of your relatives is sick and needs money, contact them to confirm it. If your relative says he or she does not know about the SMS, then it is probably a scam. Do not give money to whoever sent the message.
5. Report anything suspicious to the proper authorities if you need more protection against scams.
I just hope that these tips will help you to prepare yourself for these scams. Hopefully, there should be no more scams and more victims to be victimized by them. But, now that we are in the digital age, the authorities will be as aggressive as ever, and so are these scams.
